ISO14001 review consultation underway
Published: Tuesday 24th January 2012
ISO14001, the Environmental Management Standard, is undergoing a review process to see if changes are needed.
IEMA's Executive Director Martin Baxter has been appointed to lead the UK 's input into the revision process.
One of the key stages in the review is to decide whether all management system standards will adopt a common structure. This will help standardise terminology and jargon, and different standards may contain the same text. The decision will be made at the end of January 2012.
The adoption of the proposed new structure will then inform future discussions about ISO14001. 24 specific recommendations are under consideration, such as the use of maturity matrices, including contribution to sustainable development, and interaction with stakeholders to name a few.
Business Sustain has been involved in the consultation process, and was able to feed into a recent consultation event our experiences from implementing ISO14001 within over 300 organisations.
The last time ISO14001 was reviewed was in 2003, and 2004 saw the current revision being launched with minor changes to clauses relating to compliance checking. The current proposed amendments under consultation appear to be more far reaching, however the consultation process is far from over.
As soon as further information is known, we will include it in the next newsletter.
