Maximus'
Managing Director and Sales Manager Phil Ramsbottom recently replaced
his conventional petrol-powered car with a vehicle capable of running on
LPG. LPG produces fewer emissions than petrol or diesel and costs
significantly less, owing to the lower fuel duty it attracts.
Based on an annual mileage of approximately 18,000, the company has made savings of over 50% on fuel costs, equivalent to £1,700 per annum. Whilst an engine running on LPG is slightly less efficient than a petrol- or diesel-powered engine, this is more than compensated for by the much lower cost of the fuel, currently in the range of 36-38 pence per litre when purchased from a garage forecourt or 30-33 p/l from an independent gas supplier. A good quality engine conversion generally costs in the region of £1,500 - £2000. The PowerShift register is the authoritative source for information regarding vehicles which are eligible for discount from the Transport for London congestion charge scheme.
Asked whether he is satisfied with his choice of vehicle, Phil couldn't be more categorical. "I'm really pleased that I took the plunge. To drive, an LPG car is no different to any other, and it's nice to think that I'm doing my bit for the environment, whilst at the same time making significant cost savings".
