Bailey
and Mackey found energy to be a significant environmental aspect and
addressed this issue as part of its ISO 14001 management programme. The
company carried out a free energy survey in 1999 through the Environment
and Energy Helpline (0800 585794) and this revealed improvements that
could be made in energy efficiency on site.
Bailey and Mackey replaced a 30% efficient gas-oil fired boiler with a 77% efficient Concorde CXA gas fired boiler. As a consequence of this action they also alleviated the environmental problems associated with storing oil on site, including potential oil spills and the necessity to bund the tank.
In addition, Bailey and Mackey reduced workplace heating by six degrees and eliminated excess lighting levels. These actions reduced energy usage without requiring additional capital expenditure.
Improving energy efficiency on site saved money and prepared the company for the introduction of the Climate Change Levy.
