Powder Coatings operates two automated powder coatings lines at its
Tipton site. The powder coating industry as a whole lends itself to some
degree of powder recovery, as during the 'spraying' process not all of
the powder is attracted to the component being coated.
The powder coating lines on site have been designed, and are operated in such a way, as to minimise the wastage of this oversprayed powder, by the installation of powder recovery system on the spray booths.
Air laden with oversprayed powder is drawn from the booth to a filtration system, which consists of a cyclone and secondary filter. The heavier particles are collected by the cyclone and can be reintroduced into the process, whilst the lighter particles are removed by the secondary filter for disposal.
Roughly 50% of the total powder introduced into the system is recovered in this way, which drastically reduces the amount of virgin powder needed by around £350,000 a year.
"The recovery system means that not only do we keep costs down but fully utilise resources in the process" said Maurice Colbourne, Material Handling Supervisor at Aspect Powder Coatings.
By recovering waste powder, not only are savings made by re-introducing filtered powder back into the process, but the amount of 'waste' powder to landfill is reduced.
