West
Midlands SME Automotive Industrial Partnerships is a wash/wiper systems
assembly, packing and warehousing operation based in Redditch.
When the company examined its waste management practices whilst working towards ISO 14001 certification, achieved in 2003, it discovered that there was scope not only to increase recycling rates, but to save money too!
Prior to this, all waste had been collected in a single skip and disposed of to landfill on a weekly basis, at a cost of £1560 per annum. A typical skip would have contained paper, cardboard, small amounts of hazardous waste, scrap metal and other miscellaneous items.
By segregating the material into five individual waste streams: general waste, hazardous waste, cardboard, paper and metal, the company was able to make significant savings and to divert a significant proportion of its wastes out of landfill. The details are as follows:
This results in a current net cost of £248 per annum, compared to the previous cost of £1560. Hence a saving of £1312 has been achieved.
"The common perception is that recycling costs money. However, we have demonstrated that this is not always necessarily the case - that it is possible to save money AND benefit the environment".
