Meggitt Control Systems is part of the Meggitt group of companies which together have over 250 years’ experience in aerospace and industry. The Dunstable site, which has held ISO14001 certification since 2009, specialises in manufacturing environmental control and ice protection systems for aircraft which it supplies to Rolls-Royce, SAAB, Alenia.
As part of its continuous improvement programme relating to the ISO14001 standard the company decided to investigate the potential for energy savings and, given the current prices of electricity and gas, save money too!
Business Sustain has developed a training package specifically tailored for use with SMEs that wish to make a start on saving energy costs but have limited time and specialist knowledge to hand. The objectives of the training include
Real energy costs and half hour electricity data plots were included in training the Energy Team along with background information on energy security and environmental issues.

One of the products of this training is a customised energy walk-round checklist. Using such a checklist provides companies with a benchmark for future improvements to be made, helps priority actions to be determined and makes people more familiar with the energy consumption of their workplace equipment, heating and lighting.
As a result of using their energy walk-round checklist a number of opportunities were identified at Meggitt Control Systems. These include:
By introducing these and other measures, Meggitt Control Systems has managed to cut its annual electricity bill by approximately 4%.
The training was delivered via a clear, concise presentation and involved significant interaction with the trainees. In addition, the presentation was tailored around company data to ensure relevance to the site utility usage and current working practices.
The outcome of the training provided awareness of what we thought was being performed to what was actually being performed with respect to energy being wasted by equipment not being switched off.
As a result of the subsequent findings the ‘end of shift procedure’ has been shown to all staff and regular audits are to be undertaken to identify equipment / areas where further energy savings could be obtained.
