Facilities management of the Lower Precinct shopping mall in
Coventry city centre Employees:
Approx 20
The Lower Precinct comprises one quarter of Coventry's shopping and
is the home of some of the City's most exciting retailers, cafés and
restaurants, within a covered environment. It is managed by DTZ who
provide integrated property management services for corporate owners and
occupiers of property and have implemented environmental management
systems across over 45 sites in the UK.
In 2008, Mark Dixon, the Lower Precinct manager, attained the IEMA Certificate in Environmental Management and is enthusiastic about putting theory into practice. Mark has done lot of work on improving energy management since then such as putting the neon light murals on timer switches and saving 30% of the car park electricity bill. In 2010 he decided he would like to take further steps to improve environmental management in the Lower Precinct and engaged Business Sustain to develop a formal environmental management system with a view to achieving ISO14001 certification within the year.
The Lower Precinct is a case where many of the real or potential environmental impacts that arise are only indirectly associated with DTZ as they are due to the activities of contractors, tenants and even the general public!
With DTZ Business Sustain used its tried and tested 'Ten Steps' approach to ISO14001 implementation which is very flexible and can be paced to suit a client's availability – something that is very important to smaller companies where one person may fulfill many roles.
In the current economic climate DTZ is keen to help tenants by investigating where additional savings may be made. The ISO14001 process will help in this area with its focus on continuous improvement.
"What appealed to me with Business Sustain was that they provide a complete ISO14001 implementation package, including a legislation update service and auditor training. They advise on the practical side of environmental management including improving communications with staff, tenants and the public, promoting teamwork and good practice."
